The Importance of Sustainable Sewage wastewater Treatment in Hotel Industry

The hotel industry is one of the fastest-growing and potentially revenue-generating sectors, and it attracts many tourists to the country. Its growth and success rate have a significant impact on the environment through its daily wastewater generation.

A higher amount of wastewater generation is inevitable in the hotel industry, but it can be handled with a sustainable practice named sewage water treatment plant installation. Upholding those practices helps the hotel gain a better reputation and also provides them with the opportunity to travel on the path of nurturing Mother Earth.

Importance of Installing Sewage Water Treatment Plants in Hotels

  • Protection of water bodies: Untreated sewage pollutes scarce UAE water with harmful chemicals. Sewage treatment plants (STPs) are key to protecting our precious water resources.
  • The welfare of the people: Contaminated water containing harmful bacteria and viruses, like Salmonella, Rotavirus, and E. coli, could enter our waterways through connections to local water systems. This exposed people to these pathogens, increasing the risk of contracting illnesses like dysentery and viral infections. STPs play a crucial role in safeguarding the public health.
  • Compliance: Hotels, by nature, should adhere to their separate hotel regulations, and many rules advise hotels to install sewage treatment plants by default. If not, the respective hotels may attract severe fines from the government pollution departments.
  • Water Scarcity and Reuse: As water scarcity becomes a growing concern, Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) offer a critical solution by enabling the reuse and recycling of treated wastewater. This valuable resource can then be used for irrigation, toilet flushing, and gardening, alleviating pressure on freshwater resources.
  • Reduce, Reuse, Recycle with STPs: STPs embody the principles of the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) by significantly reducing pollutants from wastewater and transforming it into a valuable resource for non-potable purposes by its reused and recycled water.
  • Adds more value: Hotels that follow environmentally friendly practices receive additional recognition from the government and customers. Hence, STP helps increase the brand value of the hotel without spending a lot of money on marketing.
  • Green sustainable Solution: Sewage Treatment Plants (STPs) turn wastewater into a valuable resource for drip irrigation, making the STP sustainable one for irrigation facilities as well.

Working of Sewage Water Treatment Plant

The primary objective of sewage water treatment for hotels is to remove harmful suspended solids and pollutants from the water and give us recycled water that can be used for other purposes.

Currently, many advanced processes have been introduced to treat sewage waters. Among those, the most successful and popular ones are

  • Aeration: In this process, air is allowed to come into contact with the sewage water, which is followed by the aerobic biodegrading process. In that process, harmful gases and suspended solids were removed.
  • Moving Bed Bioreactor (MBBR): This process is highly used for treating organic sewage waters and for the nitrification and denitrification processes. This reactor possesses biofilm coated with beneficial microorganisms. When the wastewater comes into contact with biofilm, the organisms start to break down the complex molecules into harmless substances like h20 and oxygen.
  • Membrane Process: It is one of the best solid and liquid removal processes, and it is equipped with low-pressure filtration membranes that have undergone biological treatments. By applying pressure, solid particles are removed from the sewage water.
  • Sequential Batch Reactor: In this process, bubbling oxygen gas is incorporated into the sewage water. When the bubbling oxygen gas comes into contact with sewage water, it reduces the COD and BOD content significantly.
  • Submerged Aerated Fixed Film: This process has been deemed to be a “cost-effective “process, and it contains three levels of treatment procedures to remove the harmful SS and BOD chemicals.

Stages involved in a sewage water treatment plant in a hotel

  • Preliminary Process: The coarse or debris solids are removed from the wastewater by simple filtration procedures.
  • Primary Treatment: This involves a sedimentation or settling process where the wastewater is allowed to sediment in larger tanks for a while. Then, the sludge matter and the light-weighted particles or grease particles that float over the water are removed.
  • Secondary Treatment: Activated sludge with microorganisms is allowed to contact sewage water, and microorganisms break down the complex molecules into simple molecules.
  • Tertiary Treatment: The treated water undergoes further ultrafiltration, which results in highly treated wastewater.

Bottom line

Therefore, a sewage water treatment plant is not an option; it has become a necessity to install it in every hotel, thereby allowing hotels to showcase their environmental responsibility behaviour and their concern for the well-being of the general public and their guests.
