World environment is around the corner and this time what grabs eyeballs is the theme of the event. World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated on the 5th of June every year, with a different theme, that aims to encourage awareness and action for the protection of our environment.
2019’s World environment day is here with a Mask Challenge, that encourages people to wear face masks. The challenge which lasts for almost two weeks, from 24 May to June 5, is a great way to show leaders the importance of clean air. Given the fact that nine out of ten people breathe polluted air, campaigns like these are mandatory.
So, what can you do to beat air pollution? Do not stay aside and wait for the authorities concerned to take action. It’s the responsibility of each one of us and the methods are many;
- Relying more on public transport, car sharing, cycling or walking
- Opting for hybrid or electric vehicles
- Turning of car engine when stationary
- Using high-efficiency home heating systems and equipment
- Recycling non-organic trash
The challenge for you is to take a photo or video of yourself wearing a mask and post it on social media. Along with the post, one will have to mention the action they plan to take to reduce air pollution. Again, you shouldn’t stop with this; tag 3 people/organizations/ companies and challenge them to do the same.
On World Environment day, you need to take another photo or video of yourself showing how you completed the task and then post it on social media. Don’t forget to add #WorldEnvironmentDay and #BeatAirPollution in the posts and tag @UNEnvironment.
The UAE usually commemorates the day with various activities and even otherwise, the country implements diverse policies and measures to promote sustainable practices. The National Climate Change Plan of the UAE 2017-2050 is one such initiative by the UAE government that aims to address the causes and impacts of climate change, plan the transition into a climate resilient green economy and achieve a better quality of life.
